Breakin' the Mold

We are a group of designers inspired by climate change in South Africa,
the current state of the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) and all the issues
it has dealt with over the past few years. Global warming has caused major
water damage and mold infestations at JAG, this is one of the main reasons
for creating this outlet.

[FLASH WARNING BELOW]
OUR MANIFESTO
As South Africa continues to grapple with the effects of climate change, it is crucial that our efforts to mitigate its impacts are coupled with community building initiatives that
foster collab-oration among all South Africans. Our goal for climate change should not
be pursued in isolation but rather in tandem with the development of a strong sense of community and the cultivation of mutual accountability.

Johannesburg Art Gallery can use art to raise awareness on climate change and inspire positive behavioural change. They can foster dialogue and engagement, creating a
sense of belonging and ownership. JAG can collaborate with surrounding communities
to create public art pieces to address climate change. They can sell art pieces to raise funds to restore and rebuild the museum and local communities, as well as leading by example and adopt sustainable practises to inspire citizens of South Africa. They can
also collaborate with local artists to create climate-focused exhibitions and programs.

A strong sense of community-building that emphasizes equity, awareness, and collaboration constitutes an inclusive and achievable way to achieve South Africa's
climate change goals. By building these communities and ensuring that they are
inclusive and considerate, we will form powerful global voices and contribute to a sustainable future for our country, our continent, and the world at large.

OUR CONCEPT
The model symbolizes the growth of mold. We see this with the protruding small balloons sort of growing out and around the bigger white balloons. The bigger white balloons and the netting and foil represent the air particles and molecules in the atmosphere. Through our model, we demonstrate growth patterns of mold and how atmospheric variables can either foster or hinder mold development. Representing the interplay between natural processes and environmental conditions. Mold growth can have significant impacts on human health and ecosystem dynamics. Meaning the better we understand the atmos-pheric factors that contribute to mold growth, the more effective mold management techniques can be developed to minimize its negative effects. And by fostering a sense
of shared responsibility, trust, and empowerment in communities they can collaboratively tackle environmental issues, adapt to climate impacts, and advocate for sustainable policies. The Johannesburg Art Gallery highlights a critical platform for community engagement and collaboration. As it exemplifies the potential of art and culture in driving community-building efforts related to climate change.
WE ARE BREAKIN' THE MOLD
The brand was inspired by Climate change in South Africa and the story of JAG and all
the issues it has been dealing with over the past few years. The collaboration of Breakin’ the Mold and JAG aims to raise awareness of South Africa’s climate change goals by building the community through our prototype and the repairment of JAG, by creating new job opportunities, and providing education and hope in the community surrounding JAG.
